Hukad - South Town Centre

04:00

It’s always a treat when you get to eat delicious Filipino dishes in a lovely setting! With the help of HL Designs, the 8th company-owned branch of Cebu's very own Golden Cowrie opens in the South.

Beneath those wave-like designs on the ceiling are echo stop boards to reduce the noise inside the restaurant.

The signature puso (hanging rice) lamps hang above the bucket seats. Alternate slits of mirror and Bisazza tiles serve as accents to this wall.

The hand wash area.

Schools shouldn’t scare children away. Learning is fun, and schools should be able to encourage that. This is why Playhouse Preschool’s interior design is fun and fit for kids – just like a typical playhouse.

HL Designs was dedicated to paint it vibrantly to encourage little ones that school is fun. It could also be used for their lessons in identifying the different colors. The preschoolers would also enjoy naming the different shapes used to accentuate their lovely and lively classroom!

Here's what HL Designs did for Playhouse:

Fujinoya Bakery

07:40

Traditional Japanese Cakes from Fujinoya are now available in Cebu and HL Designs is happy to bring a different dining experience to life!

The facade is a good mix of wood, stone and metal elements.

Al fresco dining is also available.

Mirror strips and wood slats make for an interesting counter design. The same red bricks and wood elements from the exterior are also reflected in the interiors.

As you enter on the left, round banquet seats are always the first to be taken by the guests.

For those who like to go solo, bar counters stand behind the glass walls which also make it the perfect spot to people watch.

Hard to miss the ceiling design with the bespoke drop lights that run the entire span of the cafe. It also takes the attention away from the acoustic ceiling boards on T-runners which aren't very pretty but always come in handy when trying to control the noise levels of cafes and restaurants.

The client specifically requested to make the toilet something unique and pretty!

Inspired by my trip to Bali, an accent wall directly in front of the toilet consists of wood slats and mirror strips.

Something unique: water flows from the ceiling through this resin lamp made of termite laminate which actually resembles an intricate doily. The picture on the left shows the lamp when it's off. On the right, it is taken with the lamp turned on, allowing light to pass through the termite laminate giving off a beautiful illumination.

Celebrating 5 Years and Our 2nd Cafe Sarree

07:23

The month of August, though often dubbed as "ghost month" for those who believe in this tradition where most people hold off on embarking on a project, or in our line of work, they don't start construction, it happened to be a time when I hired two of my valuable employees who have made significant contributions to the success of HL Designs today. This August, we celebrate the 5 years of service of Idr. Cyril Ocaba and Archt. Kristin Ducao!

There's no better way to celebrate than with the opening of the second branch of Cafe Sarree located at the Rustan's Supermarket level of Ayala Center Cebu.

Thank you for all your hard work and thank you for lunch! (L-R: HL, Nicole, Genie, Kristin, Cyril)

HL Designs is happy to be part of the Cafe Sarree family once again!

The facade from inside the mall.

As you enter, a long solid wood table sits in the middle of the room, with a mix of different kinds of stools and oversized lamps hanging above.

A funky feature on the left: what seems to be a large picture frame is actually the hand wash area.

Today's Specials is written on wooden chopping boards.

The Cafe Sarree Design Team (L-R): HL, Sarree and Nicole

Thank you for trusting us to design your second branch!

WATEVER KTV - Lapu Lapu City, Cebu

07:37

I'm not a big karaoke fan, maybe because I can't really sing. But at least I can design one.

Watever KTV opened its second branch in Cebu last December 2013 in Pueblo Verde, Lapu Lapu City. HL Designs is happy to be part of the WKTV family. We designed our first WKTV in Dumaguete City in 2012.

The reception counter with round edges. The stripe

wall next to it sets the tone for the rest of the rooms.

The hallway - each of the doors leading to the rooms are marked with a drop ceiling above with up lighting, painted in the signature WKTV colours.

The standard KTV rooms come in three different colours: blue, orange and green. Each one has a 42" flat screen TV mounted on the wall, state-of-the-art karaoke system, and 2 microphones. The walls are padded on 2 sides and the ceiling is clad in acoustic ceiling boards for better sound absorption.

2013: The Golden Year

01:25

As 2013 comes to a close, I look back at all the projects HL Designs has done with a smile and a grateful heart for we have been blessed.

With the completion of 6 Golden Cowrie restaurants this year, it has been a golden year for us. First, we did the al fresco area at its original branch in Salinas drive, Lahug, Cebu City, which I wrote about earlier this year. Then almost simultaneously, the SM City, Cebu branch was renovated, and 2 new stores were built in Mandaue City: one along A.S. Fortuna, then another one at Park Mall.

On December 8, Golden Cowrie inaugurated 2 new branches outside Cebu: Butuan City and Puerto Princessa City, Palawan.

We at HL Designs are very grateful for the opportunity given to us to design the new restaurants and I can only hope and pray that the Golden Cowrie group will continue to be blessed as they have been a blessing to us.
